I read an article from a Christian ministry asking what the reason was that God destroyed Sodom. It was pretty vague and by the end of the article it really gave no concrete answer nor clear teachings for the Christian.
I think the bible gives some clear biblical principles about Sodom’s fall, as well as confronting their all out sexual perversion, SODOMy.
And YES it’s more than sexual perversion, and there are real take homes for even CHRISTIANS today -it’s also PRIDE- it’s also sins from a culture that was affluent. Affluence causes weak and lazy and entitled men. You won’t many men there holding swords or shovels. You will find them holding remote controls and orange fingered hands reaching in to grab some more cheese puffs.
The bible warns of the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, the pride of life. The bible describes Laodicea, which is also the condition of the church in general just before the LORD’s return, as Revelation is Chronological. Revelation 3:14-20 says
And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
These SINS are all rampant in AMERICA and from the escalating free fall to total depravity shown in ROMANS 1, sodomy of men being sexual with men and women lusting toward each other – those sins are part of a slippery slope once a nation turns from GOD and turns it’s back on God and turns it’s heart toward doing it’s own thing.
America is SODOM today and preachers in the 1950’s like Revivalist Leonard Ravenhill said even back then that if God doesn’t judge America soon, he would have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrha. LOT first looked at the watered planes of Sodom and pitched his tent TOWARD Sodom, next he was at the gates of Sodom, then he was in SODOM, his heart was VEXED over the perversion in SODOM but he lost his WITNESS to the point his family in Sodom didn’t listen to his warnings, and he compromised to the point where he offered his own daughters to the Sodomites, when he escaped the fire judgment his wife had so much of Sodom in her heart that she looked back and turned into a pillar of salt, and his same daughters committed incest with him when they left Sodom which birthed an evil people that lived a life of rebellion against God.
The sin of Sodom I think is the end of the line with their all out perversion, but they didn’t start out that way I believe.
Open Sodomy maybe was the final nail in the coffin but their sins had already sealed their fate.
Genesis 19:5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may KNOW them. 6 And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him,7 And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly.-
I have heard the LGBTQ folks argue that this was just BAD HOSPITALITY not HOMOSEXUALITY – but theirs is IGNORANT THEOLOGY –
8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not KNOWN man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof. –
The bible says earlier in Genesis – And Adam KNEW Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord.
WHAT LED TO open sodomy- the same sins of America and sodomy is increasing more and more as those sins become more rampant-
Ezekiel 16:49 Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, PRIDE, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.
Jude 1:7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
GAYPRIDE is why Sodom was fried- and it is the same pride we have in America and the same worship of the creature over the Creator, and a refusal to humble ourselves under the mighty hand of GOD.
We may not be snared by sodomy, but many will be and many have been. BUT we can be snared by lust of the opposite sex. They sing their siren songs and lure us to our deaths with lustful offers on the WEB snaring us like a spider does, they woo us with their dress on TV and in movies and in ads and at the grocery store, they flaunt their bodies to seduce us. BUT we can be just as easily seduced by the newest M&M candy or the newest sports car or newest Marvel movie or the next football game. Anything we love more than GOD is an idol- we are captivated by the lust of the eyes and want what we see. Curiosity killed the cat, and it’s killing us as a seductive or forbidden thought lures us like a fish to a hook. We want what we can’t have, and want more and more and we are not content or thankful.
2nd Timothy 3:1-7 says
This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
BUT what about our sins as believers- we tolerate sin, we love the world, we don’t lovingly warn folks to repent, we don’t live separate lives from that of the world, and so the lost doesn’t take our warnings seriously if and when we actually do open our mouths.
“Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.”- warns JESUS. He came to save and seek that which is LOST. The sin of Sodom is grieveous and caused fire and brimstone to fall- but JESUS wants men everywhere to repent. WE can’t turn from our sin without JESUS resurrection power which we get by faith –
and we can’t care about sinners without the Lord’s mercy and compassion on them.
If you are LOST and without GOD you simply need to humble yourself and call on the LORD JESUS and LOOK TO HIM alone to SAVE you from the penalty of your sin and to change your heart so you don’t want to just dive right back into the sin that cannot satisfy.
Christian, you need to stop being so prideful to think that because you sin differently than they do, that God is good with you. IF we don’t care about folks and we want judgment on folks we don’t have the heart of JESUS.
Christian, Let’s care enough to WARN, and not have so much of the WORLD on us and IN US, that our warnings are in vain.
