An observation I had posted on Facebook….
I had seen a great post card type gospel tract that has a full color NASCAR photo on it….Caption is Racing is Not a Sin.
Inside, it is stated, basically… Yes we said it. Racing is not a sin, but lying is and you’ve done it. Racing is not a sin, but lust is adultery and you’ve done it. Etc. It ends with Racing is Not a Sin, but it is just one more distraction to keep you from thinking about eternity and where you will spend it.
This has me thinking…..this ties into an earlier comment on Facebook. Facebook is not necessarily a sin, but it is a tool we can use for good or bad. But bottom line, are my silly comments that get 10 likes really going to impact someone for eternity when eternal statements get 1 like? Is there better things we can do with our time?
Perhaps. But I discovered why I do Facebook, and why I tend to get sucked into what might be time wasters. The Bible commands us to redeem the time for the days are evil. The devil keeps many of the saved today far too busy with the affairs and pleasures of this life so they aren’t challenging folks about their eternal destiny. And the devil keeps the lost busy with the affairs and pleasures of this world to even think about their eternal destiny or desiring a relationship with the God of the universe.
I find one answer why things like Facebook need to be examined to make sure 1) we are using it more for God’s glory than for our glory. and 2) that it doesn’t control us. God wants to control us. Trust me, only when God controls me is life worth living. And ask my wife, only when God controls me am I worth living with!!!!!
But I had this thought. When we start something, it seems human nature we have to finish it. I started watching Master Chef Season 5 after really getting into it last year. Amateur cooks from all over the world compete and get booted off until the last cook is standing. It is basically that old show “Survivor” but in a kitchen instead of a hut. Once I watched the first episode, I had to find out who won. If I never invested in it initially, I could have cared less.
That is one reason we love Facebook. A lot of time is invested. Pictures, friends, posts, likes, etc. To quit now is to leave it unfinished. I have to finish my newsfeed today. It won’t matter tomorrow as it will be brand new then.
I am not rebuking any of us. Just saw why we get hooked in. We jump on the Bills bandwagon, the underdog teams, the latest reality show, etc.
The Bible gives us that solution. We need to have that same determination to complete our Christian walk. We aren’t saved by our efforts, and we don’t stay saved by our efforts. But we need to walk by faith not by sight, and stay the course.
Philippians 1:6 says Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:
God invested a lot in us. 1stJohn 4:9 says In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
God started something. And he will finish it. The Bible says Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith. Maybe we feel compelled to finish what we start because that is how God wired us.
The key is to make sure that most of what we start lines up with the Bible.
Remind me of that when Master Chef Jr. starts in November.
